Does one eSIM cover all of Europe?
Yes — that’s what a regional plan is for. A Europe eSIM works across 59 countrieson one profile, so you can go France → Italy → Austria without buying anything new or swapping anything over. Prices start at €2.25.
The alternative is a country plan — cheaper per gigabyte, but only valid in the one country. If your trip is a single city break, buy the country. If you’re crossing borders, the regional plan almost always wins once you’d otherwise be buying a second one.
Check before you buy: not every “Europe” plan on the market covers the same list. Ours names every country it includes on the Europe plan page, and the Europe + Balkans plan extends it further south-east.
Why EU roaming rules may not help you
This is the part most guides skip. The EU’s “Roam Like At Home” rule means an EU or EEA mobile contract can be used across the EU at domestic rates. It is a rule about where your contract is from, not where you are.
So if you’re flying in from the United States, the UK, Canada or Australia, none of it applies to you. Your home carrier bills you its own international roaming rate — commonly $10–15 per day — and that is the number an eSIM is competing with, not a free EU allowance.
It also has limits for EU residents: a “fair use” cap applies to contracts used mostly abroad, and it doesn’t cover Switzerland, which isn’t in the EEA.
How much data do you need?
Travellers routinely overbuy. Maps, messaging, boarding passes and the occasional search are light; video and tethering are not. As a rough guide per week of ordinary travel use:
- 1–3GB — maps, messaging, email, a few searches a day
- 5–10GB — the above plus social media, photo uploads and some browsing
- 20GB+ — video calls, streaming, or tethering a laptop
If you land in the third group, compare against an unlimited plan before buying a large fixed allowance — but read the fair-use line first. Most “unlimited” plans run at full speed up to a daily allowance and then slow down, and we state that allowance and the reduced speed on every plan.
What it costs
Current regional Europe prices, cheapest plan at each size:
| Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1GB | 3 days | €2.25 |
| 3GB | 3 days | €4.08 |
| 5GB | 7 days | €5.78 |
| 10GB | 7 days | €9.44 |
| 20GB | 15 days | €16.22 |
Against a typical $10–15 daily roaming pass, a two-week trip on a carrier plan runs to well over €120. The same fortnight on a regional eSIM is usually a single-digit or low double-digit figure.
Regional plan or one per country?
Country plans are cheaper per gigabyte. Here’s where the popular ones start:
| Country | Plans | From |
|---|---|---|
| France | 36 | €1.05 |
| Italy | 36 | €1.24 |
| Spain | 36 | €1.24 |
| Germany | 36 | €1.24 |
| United Kingdom | 36 | €1.24 |
| Greece | 36 | €1.24 |
| Portugal | 36 | €1.24 |
| Netherlands | 36 | €1.24 |
The rule of thumb: one or two countries, buy per country. Three or more, buy the region. If you’re unsure, the trip planner takes your list of stops and tells you which is cheaper — and which countries a bundle would miss.
5G and network quality
An eSIM isn’t a different network — it roams onto the same local operators your phone would otherwise use, so coverage is theirs, not ours. In Europe that generally means 5G in cities and 4G elsewhere.
We list the actual carriers and the top network generation on each country page, because it varies: a plan that reaches 5G in Germany may top out at 4G two countries away. It’s worth a glance before you buy rather than assuming.
Install before you fly
Install the eSIM at home, on wi-fi, while you still have a working connection — installing needs internet, which is exactly what you won’t have at the airport. Validity starts on first data use, not at purchase, so installing early costs you nothing.
- Buy and receive the QR code and install link immediately
- Install over wi-fi before you leave; leave the line turned off
- Turn on the eSIM’s data roaming when you land
- Keep your normal SIM active for calls and texts on your own number
