Highlights
Copán
A UNESCO-listed Maya city near the Guatemalan border, famous for finely carved stelae, the Hieroglyphic Stairway and tunnels beneath the main temples. Scarlet macaws are often seen around the site, and the cobbled town of Copán Ruinas makes a pleasant base.
Roatán
The largest of the Bay Islands, with dive sites on the reef just offshore, the long sandy beach at West Bay and a laid-back village scene in West End. It is the most developed of the islands.
Utila
A smaller, more relaxed Bay Island that is one of the most popular places in the region to learn to dive. Whale sharks are sometimes seen in the surrounding waters, most often in spring.
Cayos Cochinos
A protected marine area of small cays and coral reefs between the mainland and the Bay Islands, with Garífuna fishing communities and clear water for snorkelling.
Pico Bonito National Park and the Cangrejal River
Near La Ceiba, rainforest-covered mountains rise steeply from the coast. The Cangrejal River is known for white-water rafting, and trails lead to waterfalls and swimming holes.
Lake Yojoa
Honduras's largest natural lake, between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, surrounded by hills and coffee farms. It is excellent for birdwatching and close to the Pulhapanzak waterfall.
Gracias and Celaque National Park
A small colonial town in the western highlands with hot springs nearby, at the foot of the cloud forest of Celaque, which contains the country's highest peak.
The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve
A vast, UNESCO-listed rainforest in the remote Mosquitia region of the north-east, reached only by small plane and boat. Trips are expeditions arranged with specialist operators and local communities.
Interesting facts about Honduras
- The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which runs past the Bay Islands, is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
- The term 'banana republic' was coined by the American writer O. Henry, inspired by his time in Honduras in the 1890s.
- The Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copán carries the longest known Maya inscription, with more than 1,000 glyphs.
- The Garífuna people, descended from West African and Indigenous Caribbean ancestors, live along the Caribbean coast and their language, music and dance are recognised by UNESCO.
- The currency, the lempira, is named after a sixteenth-century Indigenous leader who resisted Spanish conquest.
Best time to visit
The dry season, from roughly December to April, is the most popular time for the mainland, with better roads and clearer skies. The Caribbean coast and Bay Islands have their own pattern: the wettest months there tend to be around October to January, when northerly winds bring storms, while spring and summer are often good for diving. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Holy Week in March or April is a major holiday, so book ahead.

Getting around
Long-distance first-class buses link the main cities, Copán Ruinas and La Ceiba and are the most comfortable way to travel by road. Ferries connect La Ceiba with Roatán and Utila, and domestic flights reach the Bay Islands from the mainland. Within cities, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than hailing cars on the street. Tourist shuttles connect Copán with Guatemala and other popular stops. Road travel at night is best avoided.
Staying connected in Honduras
4G coverage is good in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Copán Ruinas and on Roatán and Utila. Signal becomes weaker in the mountains, inside national parks and on smaller cays, and much of the Mosquitia region has no coverage at all. Wi-Fi is common in hotels, hostels and dive shops on the islands, though it may be slow. Download offline maps before heading into rural areas. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.
