Dubai International (DXB) is the arrival point for most visitors, with Al Maktoum (DWC) taking a growing share of low-cost traffic. Both have SIM desks in arrivals, and both have queues for them at the hours the long-haul flights land. An eSIM installed at home skips that entirely: you switch the line on after immigration and have data before you reach the taxi rank.

Coverage across the city is dense — Downtown, Marina, Deira, the Palm and the length of the Metro are all well served, and the Metro runs above ground for much of its route. It thins out where you'd expect: desert excursions inland from Al Qudra, the quieter stretches of the E611, and some of the enclosed lower levels of the very large malls.
Worth knowing
The UAE restricts voice and video calling over apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger. This is a national regulation applied at the network, so it applies on hotel wi-fi, on a local SIM and on a roaming eSIM alike — no data plan can change it, and any provider promising otherwise is misleading you. Licensed alternatives such as Botim are permitted, and messaging on the usual apps works normally. Rules here do change, so check the current position before you rely on a particular app for calls home.

Voice and video calls over WhatsApp are restricted by UAE regulation, and that restriction is applied by the networks — so it applies to a roaming eSIM exactly as it does to a local SIM or hotel wi-fi. Text messaging works normally. Licensed calling apps such as Botim are the permitted route, and rules can change, so check before you travel.
Do I need to register my passport for a Dubai eSIM?
No. Registration requirements apply to buying a local UAE subscription. A travel eSIM roams onto the UAE networks instead, so you buy it online before you go with no paperwork on arrival.
Will my eSIM work at Dubai airport?
Yes, as soon as you switch the line on and enable data roaming for it. Install the profile before you fly — installing needs an internet connection, which is the one thing you don't reliably have on landing.
